Divide your alternator pulley size into your crank pulley size to get the ratio. Example: If you have a 6" crank pulley and a 2" alternator pulley. 6/2=3. You have a 3 to one ratio, you multiply your engine RPM by 3 so if your engine is turning 1500 RPM's your alternator is turning 4500 RPM's. Note: you do not count the diameter of the other.

Failing alternator, idler pulley, or something else?.
There are currently two types of ADP pulleys: Alternator Decoupler (OAD) Pulleys and One-Way Clutch (OWC) Pulleys. Toyota products use the OAD type. Essentially, these pulleys have a clutch-type mechanism inside the pulley that allows the pulley to free-spin when de-accelerating. It's suppose to smooth out engine vibration and "improve the. If you mean adjust the tension on the belt there are 2 possible methods. In some cases the alternator is mounted to on a pivot and secured with another bolt. To adjust loosen the securing bolt and pivot the alternator. In other cases the alternator is solid mounted to the engine and adjustable pulley tightens the belt.

Discussion Starter · #3 · Dec 16, 2004. That is bigger than mine.. I measured it and its belt diameter is 3.75 inches. The original pulley was 2.5 inchs across so the decrease is fairly significant. I need to keep the alternator spinning so fast due to my EFI and my lower effective gear ratio otherwise I would jump on that setup.. Replace or tighten as necessary, making sure the belt is properly aligned on the pulley. Do check the pulley flanges, as bent pulley flanges are a common cause of belts running out of alignment. Improperly aligned alternator belts will often produce a whining sound. Fixing a misaligned belt may also eliminate the noise. 2. Loose Alternator Bolt.

The pulleys should not "spin forever". New pulleys have a slight resistance giving them a tight feel while old pulleys will make a "crackling" type sound from its center (where the bearing sits). Grab the top and bottom of the pulley and see if it has any play. rocking it against it's center as if it were a see-saw. The pulleys should show very. The FSM shows a procedure using a SST to turn the rotor shaft inside the pulley nut torquing to 81 ft·lbf while held in a vise. If the pulley is not tight it can spin on the alternator rotor ruining the pulley and perhaps the alternator rotor. A smaller alternator pulley is more prone to slipping than a larger one. Got a 1-7/8" pulley from a members here. the pulley was offset a couple ribs and the hub was too thick to use the lock washer. so i made the mystake of grinding the hub about 3/16" to get it back in alignment. then realized the reason its offset is because now it rubs the case. used a washer to get it back how it was. seems good, hopefully it wont slip due to the washer and no lock washer. now.

Gentlemen, At lot of testing and measurements has finally paid off. It appears that the alternator was not sliding on the bushing properly. The alternator was angling slightly causing the belt to be pulled off the ac pulley. The fix was to put a washer on the bolt which caused the bushing to tighten up to the alternator. Hi John Not sure if this is a serious question or not. If your alternator is spinning fast enough to charge the battery when the engine is at idle , ie it's output is around 14 volts, then I can't see how spinning if faster will make any difference at all.
